What’s the difference between a Dietitian a Nutritionist and a Health Coach?

I’m so glad you asked! Simply stated, all dietitians are nutritionists; not all nutritionists are dietitians. As Registered Dietitians (also called Registered Dietitian Nutritionist), we are credentialed food and nutrition experts who complete multiple layers of education, specialized training, and must maintain at least 75 hours of continuing education credits every 5 years for licensure throughout our careers. Similar to medical doctors, dietitians can have different specialties and work in a variety of settings ranging from clinical/hospital settings, research, food service, community programs, wellness and more.

In the U.S., regulations determine who can offer health and wellness services, known as the "scope of practice." These laws, which can vary by state, dictate which practitioners are authorized to use nutrition and other health-related tools in their work. When it comes to Health Coaches, the field is largely unregulated, leading to varying levels of qualification and expertise. In some states, health coaches are not permitted to provide nutritional advice.

When seeking support for your nutrition and health goals, it is important to consider the individual's background, training, experience and credentials to ensure they are well-suited to your needs. What are the benefits of working with a wellness dietitian?

Working with a wellness dietitian can help you achieve a balanced and sustainable approach to health. Benefits include personalized nutrition advice, support in achieving specific health goals, improved relationship with food, and expert guidance on managing medical conditions through empowered eating. I work primarily with midlife professionals who are struggling with sub-par self-care; confusion about what to eat for optimal health; cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, or certain hormones that are outside of optimal range. I teach you how to reclaim your vitality by boosting your food confidence and optimizing your energy without harsh diets.

Can you work with individuals with specific dietary needs or medical conditions?

Yes, I work with clients who have specific dietary needs or certain medical conditions. Most of my clients are seeking to improve their cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar balance, digestion, metabolism, energy level and/or overall body composition. We create a tailored nutrition and wellness plan that considers health history, health & wellness goals, and personal preferences while incorporating intuitive eating principles.

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive eating is an evidence-based approach to eating that emphasizes listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues, rather than adhering to external diet rules. It promotes a healthy relationship with food by encouraging you to eat when you're hungry and stop when you're satisfied, while also making peace with food and rejecting the diet mentality. As a dietitian trained in intuitive eating, I can guide you through the principles of this approach, help you reconnect with your body's signals, and provide support as you learn to trust yourself with food. We work together to address any barriers to intuitive eating, such as emotional eating

Can I sign up for a one-time consult?

I work with my clients in a multi-session, multi-faceted program format, because this is the best way to set you up for success so you can implement the strategies and achieve your desire results. A single session or two will not allow you the time to form lifelong habit change that my programs are designed to promote. We will form a partnership. We will get you to your goals step by step. There are certain areas that will take more time. I serve as an accountability partner to help keep you accountable to your action items and goals. I am here as your guide so that you get the specialist support that you need.

How do I know that working with you will work for me?

My programs are designed for individuals who are ready to take action and committed to making long lasting changes for optimal health and longevity. Clients who get the best results are the ones who put in the time and commit to the process. If this resonates with you, we could be an excellent match! My approach is highly collaborative in that I treat your goals as if they were my own. I guide you step-by-step, providing personalized support and accountability while helping you keep yourself accountable. If you are looking for a “quick fix” or strict “diet” then I’m not a good fit for you. Can you guarantee I will get results?

I will teach, inspire, and support you with proven strategies and tools, but ultimately your commitment and dedication to programs and the work you put in will determine your results. Results are not something I, or anyone, can guarantee. As your dietitian and wellness coach, I will be there to guide you, support you and help keep you accountable. Only you have the power to make your health and wellness vision a reality. Making sustainable changes can save your life (and certainly transform your quality of life!), and it will take an investment of time and effort on your part to adopt new practices. Health doesn't have to be hard. I’m here to save you time and lessen the stress. However, you must be willing to commit to yourself to achieve your desired results.

Do you see clients for nutrition services virtually or in-person?

I am primarily a virtual-based private practice, and also offer in-person classes, speaking engagements and events. For private coaching and group programs, we will conduct telehealth consultations through a HIPPA compliant platform. You are able to conveniently join your sessions from the comfort of your own home/office.

What’s your process for taking on new clients?

Once we agree that we are a good fit (usually through a free strategy call), we immediately get your kick-start session booked. I provide you with all the essential information to get started with your program and guide you through the onboarding process for my HIPAA-compliant platform, “Practice Better.” This platform will be your “portal” where everything will be housed so that communicating will be easy! You have the option to instant message me through this platform, so you can communicate with me directly. It’s like having a personal nutrition coach by your side!

Do you accept insurance?

I accept insurance for 1-1 nutrition counseling through Nourish, a virtual platform that connects you with registered dietitians (like me!) and allows many clients to receive Medical Nutrition Therapy care at no cost. You can book with me directly through Nourish here. For my private practice, I do not accept insurance. The level of personalized support I provide in coaching programs, group offerings, and corporate wellness services goes beyond what insurance typically covers. I’m committed to delivering comprehensive, holistic solutions with the individual attention you deserve – without the restrictions imposed by insurance companies. I do accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards, depending on your plan. If applicable, I can also provide a “Superbill” for you to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.If you have questions or need clarification, let’s connect!
